Starfish
Starfish children have a love for books and enjoy reading for various reasons, including entertainment, gaining information, and fostering imagination and creativity. Alongside their passion for reading, they also enjoy writing and illustrating their own books.
This term, Starfish children embarked on an exciting journey to explore the school library and learn how to navigate it effectively. They began by understanding the concept of classification through relatable examples, such as organising items in supermarkets. The children grasped the importance of grouping items based on their properties to make it easier for shoppers to find what they need.
Building on this concept, they were introduced to fiction and non-fiction books and later explored the Dewey Decimal Classification System using the library chart. Although the system can be complex for some children, many quickly learned how to locate books on topics like fossils, prehistoric life, and animals. It was wonderful to see their determination as they searched for books using the classification numbers on the shelves. One child proudly shared that she now understands the meaning behind those numbers.
The children also engaged in a creative activity by performing a skit based on Giraffes Can’t Dance. They enthusiastically took on various roles, experimented with voice intonations, practiced dance steps, and brought different characters to life. The practice sessions were lively and engaging, with all the children participating actively and thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Sea Lions
It has been a busy and exciting term in our classroom. Children are doing exceptionally well across all areas of the curriculum. We have had some fantastic discussions, hands-on activities, and group work this term.
One of the highlights of the term was our Noongar Language Incursion with Dylan Collard. Dylan provided an engaging and educational experience that allowed the children to learn about the history, culture, and language of the Noongar people. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to connect with Aboriginal culture and gain a deeper understanding of the traditions of the land we live on. The children were particularly excited to practice some new Noongar words, and they have been eager to use them in class ever since!
We also had a very informative and fun Constable Care Incursion, where the children learnt valuable lessons about safety, responsibility, and the role of police officers in our community. The Constable Care team provided a range of interactive discussion that helped the children understand important concepts around personal safety and how to make good decisions.
As we approach the end of the year, the excitement is building in the classroom as we prepare for the Christmas Carols performance. The children have been practicing their singing and dancing with lots of enthusiasm and joy, and it was wonderful to share this special moment with you all!
