Starfish planned and set up an edible veggie garden during springtime. Firstly, we discussed the types of plants that we wanted to grow. Next, the garden soil was prepared so that the vegetables can grow well. Then necessary seedlings were purchased and the children planted the seedlings. They grew veggies and herbs such as lettuce, beans, cherry tomatoes and basil. The lettuce grew within weeks. Children harvested the produce and sold it to the staff members. Children also learned to collect and save seeds from cherry tomatoes. This will help to create our class seed bank collection for the next planting season. Children learn the importance of sustainable living and are looking forward to harvesting the sweet corn…. not sure if it will be ready before the holidays.
