Children from Dugongs visited the AP to work on an extension project with Andrew (AP advisor) – dissecting a rat. The children had prepared for this by learning how to use the dissection tools (including scalpels and scissors) and by learning the fundamentals of mammalian biology, such as the digestive system. The children followed instructions to open the abdomen of the rat and identify various organs including the liver, lungs, diaphragm and intestines. They also discussed the structure of the oesophagus and the differences between the biology of male and female specimens.
