Selected senior students from the Adolescent Program will soon be undertaking an educational tour of Australia’s National Capital: Canberra! The students making up our Canberra team have been selected based on their demonstrated leadership, kindness, enthusiasm, independence and capability to work well together as a team. Each team member will assume a unique role pre- and post-trip with dedicated responsibilities, while I take responsibility as head coordinator engaging in budgeting, researching, planning and making bookings as part of my senior project.

During our senior trip, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. Exciting attractions on our itinerary include a tour of Parliament House, programs at the National Electoral Education Centre, Museum of Australian Democracy, and the Australian War Memorial plus visits to Questacon and the National Art Gallery.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our AP in the amount of $510 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We are very grateful to the Australian Government for providing us with this rebate as it has assisted all participating students in being able to attend.

As we look towards August with excitement, there is still much to do! During the months leading up to our trip, the team will be coordinating fundraisers and meal plans, attending progress meetings and engaging in extended Civics and Citizenship coursework. We look forward to our tour of the National Capital and can’t wait to keep you posted on our upcoming adventure.
